Yesterday was jam-packed full o' fun. For starters, I got to wake up at the lovely time of 7:30! YIPPEE! It was out of precaution that I did so, because I had no idea when Najah would move-in. Luckily I didn't sleep in because she arrived right around 10:30, with her entire family. Haley and I sat on my bed and watched them try to figure out how to put her side of the room together. In other words, adorable. Najah's mom is really friendly and laid-back, which is the complete opposite of the other freshmen parents I helped out yesterday.
Speaking of which, I had no idea you could treat people who have volunteered their time and energy to help your child's move-in go smoothly like trash. Jesus, people! We're here to help you, not forced to make 8 trips back to your mini-van because "I think I could carry this small box, but since you have something that has wheels on it, I'm going to take this opportunity to use you and screw the other families who really need you, I'M LAZY AND OVER-PRIVILEGED. DID I MENTION I DRIVE A VERY NICE MINI-VAN? BECAUSE I DO." There were so many parents who either: a) didn't thank us, just kind of ignored us once we got to the room, b) thanked us and then very vocally demanded their sullen teenager to thank us as well (for the record, none of the students thanked us), or c) overly thanked us and praised us for being "life-savers" and "miracle workers." Please, ma'am, I do what I can. But what really got me was that last year when I did this, I declined so many tip offers from grateful parents. I could've made BANK last year with the amounts being offered. So I got really excited for this year, I wasn't going to be poor come Sunday afternoon.
Guess what? I'M STILL POOR. 0 tips. 0 TIPS. I should've crashed a cart out of spite.
So Najah moved in and we have a futon! Granted, not the world's most comfortable futon, but a futon nonetheless. We both share an unspoken obsession with owls, but I'm fairly sure that will be brought up in later conversations.
Haley and I worked from 1-3 and 5-7 yesterday. A little helpful advice for those Pointer Pal-ing it up next year: NO ONE MOVES IN AFTER 4. We sat around the lobby and talked about how everyone on campus will eventually die from some form of STDs. The parents probably didn't enjoy eavesdropping in, but I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
We ended up watching movie after skipping out early on our shifts. SHOCKER. And the movie poster from said movie will be the Picture of the Day:
